About Stanton-on-the-Wolds Village
Stanton-on-the-Wolds is a small village ten miles south-east of Nottingham. The Saxon settlement that became the village was called ‘Stanton’ or ‘stoney town’ after the copious stones or boulders found in the locality; ‘Wold’ refers to a low wooded hill.
The medieval village lay between the church (now dedicated to All Saints) and the manor house to the west. Following sixteenth century enclosure for sheep farming, the village houses were dilapidated and the village became deserted.
